The idea of owning a complete set of scuba diving equipment can be equal parts intimidating and costly. A considerable amount of space — and more importantly, money — have to be readily available to you. But if you’re seriously considering scuba diving, then having a simple set of diving gear will tremendously make your life easier. Take a look at the following basic equipment you will need to start learning how to scuba dive!
Mask
A Mask enables you to see clearly underwater. Unlike swimming goggles, a Diver’s Mask is designed with an enclosed nose to help you adjust to pressure changes when diving. Plus, if you wear prescription glasses, you can get masks that accommodate them.
Snorkel
Snorkels help you breathe underwater and come in handy in open water if you want to conserve air by swimming on the surface.
Exposure Suit
The wetsuit is the most commonly used exposure suit for the diving environment we have in the country, and it is usually recommended because of its versatility. It helps keep you insulated during a dive and even protects you from jellyfish stings, scratches, and burns.
Booties
Booties provide insulation as well as protection for your feet. They’re also required if you’re wearing Open Heel fins.
Fins
Using your leg muscles and core strength, fins help propel you through the water more efficiently, but do note that the type of fin that suits you depends on how strong your leg muscles are.
Everyone comes in different shapes and sizes, and because the above-stated equipment relies heavily on proper fit, you will have to get your own set to make sure they fit you comfortably and, more importantly, work properly. Another benefit of getting your personalised set of scuba diving gear is that it’s guaranteed to be cleaner and safer — especially for snorkels, masks, and booties.
For now, you don’t have to worry about the regulator set, BCD, and other pieces of equipment not on the list as they can be provided at a low rental fee by your school. Also, you may rent the additional equipment from most dive resorts. Another tip is to consult your Dive Buddies instructor for the basic equipment you may benefit from more! Who knows?
